Museum Day: Have you ever wanted to take a look behind the scenes of Rosedown? Well, Saturday September 24th you can. Site manager Trish Aleshire will give a 10:30am tour of what the public doesn’t see here at Rosedown. On tour you will see the green house and the attic. Who doesn’t want to see the attic! Put it on your calendars and come by for a visit.

Recent Excavations at the Conservatory at Rosedown Plantation SHS: October is Louisiana’s Archaeology Month and you can help celebrate by attending a talk by Louisiana’s Southeast Regional Archagaeologist, Dr. Rob Mann. Dr. Mann will discuss his recent work at Rosedown’s conservatory at Magnolia Mound Plantation, October 27th from 11am to noon. The talk is free, but there is a charge to tour the house and grounds. Rosedown Funeral Re-enactment and Soul Stories: October 29, 2011, Funeral: 3 pm; Soul Stories: 4 pm. The Rosedown Main House will be in mourning as Rosedown Interpretive Staff re-enacts the funeral service for a member of the historic Turnbull-Bowman family. Throughout the day, the house will be decorated according to 19th century mourning customs and re-enactors will be dressed in 19th century-style mourning costumes. The funeral service will be held at 4 pm inside the main house. Following the funeral, costumed Rosedown Interpretive Staff will portray the spirits of various Turnbull-Bowman family members who have returned to the main house from their graves. The “spirits” will talk about their lives and share reminiscences from their pasts.

Christmas in the Country: December 2-4, 2011, 9 am-5 pm. Rosedown’s extensive gardens will be featured as a part of this annual Christmas Celebration.
Christmas at Rosedown: December 17-18, 2011, 9 am-5 pm. Rosedown will host its annual Christmas celebration. Site staff and volunteers will demonstrate 19th century arts and crafts throughout the plantation complex. The public will see the Main House dressed in period decorations and hear stories of Christmas traditions at Rosedown that were passed down through the Turnbull and Bowman families. The historic down-hearth cooking demonstration will also be presented.

19th Century Christmas Decoration: December 1 through 31, 2011, 9 am-5 pm. Rosedown’s Main House and Nina’s Wing will be dressed in historic, early-to-mid 19thcentury-style Christmas décor, consisting of natural greenery garlands, fruit and nut displays, cypress and cedar wreaths, and potted poinsettia blooms.

Civil War Encampment: February 11-12, 2012, 9 am-5 pm. During the Civil War Union Soldiers occupied the grounds at Rosedown. They also ravaged the house for supplies and luxuries. On this weekend, the 7thLouisiana will set up camp at Rosedown. They will perform drills, cook, play music, sew, etc. The public will have the opportunity to observe what a soldier’s life was like on an occupied plantation during the war. Visitors will also see how the Turnbull-Bowman family endured the period of Union occupation on their plantation.
Lost Arts Saturdays: African and Caribbean Influence in Southern Antebellum Cooking: February 18, 2012, 11 am – 2 pm. In recognition/celebration of Black History Month, State Parks Staff will discuss and demonstrate the tremendous influence of African andCaribbean peoples to the cooking heritage of the Antebellum South. Visitors will receive printed menus and recipes of all dishes prepared during this demonstration, highlighting the specific African andCaribbean influences in each recipe.
Horticultural Seminar: February 25, 2012, 10 am-Noon. Manager/Horticulturist Patricia Aleshire conducts this popular garden program on “Camellias.” During a slide/lecture session, Aleshire will discuss the historical background of the numerous varieties of camellias, as well as the care needed for these beautiful plants to thrive in a southern garden. The slide/lecture session will be followed by a walking tour of selected areas of Rosedown’s historic gardens, to view some of the best heirloom and contemporary varieties of camellias on the grounds.
Black History Month Display: The month of February, 10 am-4 pm. In celebration of Black History Month, Rosedown will mount a display in the gift shop conference room honoring the lives and accomplishments of African-Americans. The exhibit will feature pictures, brief biographies and music of African-Americans who had an influence on history
Easter Egg Hunt: March 3, 2012, 1 pm. Easter was an important holiday at Rosedown in the 1800s. On this day children can participate in an old-fashioned Easter Egg Hunt on the grounds of the plantation. After the hunt, children can enjoy playing 19th century games. Prizes will be awarded to the children who find the special “Rosedown” eggs.
Audubon Pilgrimage: March 16-18, 2012, 9 am-5 pm. Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site will be featured as part of the annual Audubon Pilgrimage. Additionally, Rosedown’s popular Historic Cooking Program will be offered throughout the weekend.

A Day of Love: The Rosedown Wedding: April 14, 2012, Wedding: 1 pm. Imagine music, dancing, graceful ladies in beautiful gowns, and handsome gentlemen in formal evening dress. At Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site, love is in the air and two historic plantation houses and families are united on this day; as costumed re-enactors “travel back in time” 155 years to present the April 9, 1857 wedding of Sarah Turnbull of Rosedown to James Pirrie Bowman of Oakley. The wedding re-enactment will be held at 1 pm with the reception to follow.
The Duel at High Noon: May 5, 2012, Noon. Dueling was a way a gentleman could save face if he had been disrespected or insulted by someone. This program will demonstrate the different types of duels throughout history, and the rules that governed them. Also discussed will be the most well known duels and duelists in history.

The Cotton Experience: Variable Dates September through November, 2011, 10 am-4 pm. This brief encounter allows guests to experience the job of cotton picking. During these months visitors are able to walk amongst rows of cotton plants, pluck bolls of cotton from the plants and complete this task by removing the seeds from the bolls. Once the cotton is picked and deseeded, visitors can drop the cotton in an authentic “cotton sack.”
