Louisiana’s African American Heritage Trail and App

In the spirit of celebrating Black History not just in the month of February, but all year-long, Louisiana created an African-American Heritage Trail. The trail was officially launched in 2008 with 26 sites listed and as of 2010 the trail now has 33 sites that includes Rosedown Plantation SHS. The trail also has an iPhone App that is free to download for anyone interested in researching the trail on the go.

Rosedown’s February Calendar

Black History Month Display: The month of February, 10 am-4 pm. In celebration of Black History Month, Rosedown will mount a display in the gift shop conference room honoring the lives and accomplishments of African-Americans. The exhibit will feature pictures, brief biographies and music of African-Americans who have influenced history.

Civil War Encampment: February 11-12, 2012, 9 am-5 pm. During the Civil War Union Soldiers occupied the grounds at Rosedown. They also ravaged the house for supplies and luxuries. On this weekend, the 7^thLouisiana will set up camp at Rosedown. They will perform drills, cook, play music, sew, etc. The public will have the opportunity to observe what a soldier’s life was like on an occupied plantation during the war. Visitors will also see how the Turnbull-Bowman family endured the period of Union occupation on their plantation.

Lost Arts Saturdays: African and Caribbean Influence in Southern Antebellum Cooking: February 18, 2012, 11 am – 2 pm. In recognition/celebration of Black History Month, State Parks Staff will discuss and demonstrate the tremendous influence of African and Caribbean peoples to the cooking heritage of the Antebellum South. Visitors will receive printed menus and recipes of all dishes prepared during this demonstration, highlighting the specific African and Caribbean influences in each recipe.

Horticultural Seminar: February 25, 2012, 10 am-Noon. Manager/Horticulturist Patricia Aleshire conducts this popular garden program on “Camellias.” During a slide/lecture session, Aleshire will discuss the historical background of the numerous varieties of camellias, as well as the care needed for these beautiful plants to thrive in a southern garden. The slide/lecture session will be followed by a walking tour of selected areas of Rosedown’s historic gardens, to view some of the best heirloom and contemporary varieties of camellias on the grounds.

Annual Pass

You can now purchase your 2012 annual passes at Rosedown SHS. This pass allows you to enter any LA State Park and Historic Site. The pass is $50, it covers the permit holder and any accompanying persons in a private non commercial vehicle.
